Seven essays · three appendices

Why postwar capitalism's wage-demand circuit stops reproducing itself, set out as a chain of premises that can each be attacked.

How to read the sequence

Each essay closes one comfortable answer to the question of how the wage-demand circuit might be saved. They are built to be read in order, but each stands alone.

The architecture is cumulative. Unit Cost Dominance establishes the empirical condition. Interface Collapse establishes how it propagates from tasks to workflows. The Multiplayer Prisoner’s Dilemma shows that no actor can stop the propagation. The Sorites Collapse Principle and Categorical Recursion show that regulation cannot draw the line that would let it try. The Successor System and Drag Is Not Rescue show that neither transfers nor friction restore what is lost.

What the thesis claims, and what it does not

The thesis is a structural claim about one economic arrangement: an economy in which mass productive participation funds mass consumption, which funds mass participation. It claims that this circuit stops self-reproducing once machine-plus-verifier production undercuts human cognitive labour across enough of the economy.

It does not claim that work disappears, that every job goes, or that the change arrives on a date. It does not predict what replaces the circuit. Its language is probabilistic and structural, and every premise is stated with the evidence that would refute it.

The essays

  • Essay 1 · P1

    Unit Cost Dominance

AI plus a thin layer of human review now beats human-only production on cost and quality for a large and growing share of professional work.

  • Essay 2 · P2

    Interface Collapse

White-collar work was protected by software that did not talk to itself. Now that models operate the software, the protection is closing.

  • Essay 3 · P3

    The Multiplayer Prisoner's Dilemma

Restraint is available to every actor and dominated for every actor. The same payoff repeats for workers, firms, sectors and states.

  • Essay 4 · P4, regulation

    The Sorites Collapse Principle

Inside a single workflow there is no point where assistance turns into replacement, so no rule that needs that line can defend the wage-demand circuit.

  • Essay 5 · P4, regulation

    Categorical Recursion

AI is five legal objects at once. Regulate one face and the deployment presents another. No law needs to be broken for the rule to miss.

  • Essay 6 · P4

    The Successor System

Structural alternatives to the wage can keep a population fed. They cannot restore the productive necessity that gave mass labour its leverage.

  • Essay 7 · P4, friction

    Drag Is Not Rescue

Integration cost, liability, gatekeeping and the rest are real. They slow the propagation. None of them, alone or together, restores mass productive necessity.

The standard it is held to

The two appendices are where the argument is meant to be attacked. The first states the refutation conditions premise by premise. The second names the moves that look like refutations and are not. The evidence that bears on all of it is kept in a live, reviewed register.

Editions

This is the Living Edition, revised in October 2026 with evidence through July 2026. The fixed v1.1.2 baseline of May 2026 remains on Unit Cost Dominance and in a bot-readable form at thesis.copecheck.com, with EPUB and PDF. The argument is the same in both. The Living Edition is tighter and carries the newer evidence.
