Beyond severance
The thesis stops at the end of the circuit. These pieces ask what can still be designed, and where economic rent goes once cognition is cheap.
The thesis ends at severance on purpose
The seven essays diagnose the end of the wage-demand circuit. They do not say what replaces it, because the answer does not sit inside economics. What follows severance depends on who controls systems that no longer need to negotiate with the people they serve.
The pieces in this section push past that boundary without pretending to cross it. One asks whether any successor system can be designed at all. The other follows the money: what happens to the rent that frontier models currently earn once near-frontier capability is downloadable and cheap.
The constraint wearing four costumes
A frontier model was asked, repeatedly, to design a fiscal architecture that keeps a polity fed, stable and legitimate for fifty years without mass wage labour. Every design died. Use taxes die on the line nobody can draw. Profit taxes die on capital that moves. The one surviving design, taxing land, energy, water and compute footprint in exchange for citizen equity, holds for perhaps twenty-five years before its base thins.
The failures share one shape. They are a single constraint, the control problem, appearing in four forms. That is where economics hands over to alignment, and why the next twenty years decide what gets locked in.
The shortening half-life of intelligence
A trilogy and a coda, in the order fact, mechanism, consequence, correction. Near-frontier open weights make the model layer’s scarcity premium contestable. Competitive hosting turns that into a commodity input sold like bandwidth. Capital that was financed against scarcity then meets pricing that is no longer scarce. The coda corrects the series: rent is not conserved. It follows the slowest-decaying complement that still binds, splits when several bind, and vanishes when none do.

The Constraint Wearing Four Costumes
A frontier model was asked to design a successor to the wage-demand circuit. Every design failed, and the failures had one shape.

The Second DeepSeek Moment
Kimi K3 did not make frontier AI free. It made near-frontier capability downloadable, and that is enough to make the scarcity premium contestable.

The frontier labs are building a product Hetzner will sell like bandwidth
Open weights create an outside option. Standard endpoints, optimisation and routing can turn it into an industrial input priced by the accepted output.

The Margin Call
Debt sized to scarcity pricing, serviced by contested pricing. Where the gap breaks a lender, the written-down capacity can make labour substitution cheaper, not slower.

Rent Is Not Conserved
The surviving rent does not have to land on physical capital. It follows the slowest-decaying complement still binding, splits when several bind, and vanishes when none do.
Five no-regret moves
If the mechanism holds, the useful window is the one in which ownership conditions can still be set. The moves below are defensible under ordinary economics whether or not the thesis is right.
- Stop drawing the line. Legislate around cognition, not about it. Any instrument that depends on separating assistance from replacement fails on definition before it reaches enforcement.
- Move the tax base while it is boring. Shift off payroll and income towards what cannot move or be redefined: land, energy, water and compute footprint. The political price rises with delay.
- Trade permits for equity, not promises. AI capital still needs power, water, land and grid connections from territory. Spend that leverage on permanent citizen equity entrenched as property.
- Watch the right dials. Headline unemployment lags by design. Build triggers on junior-to-senior ratios, graduate non-absorption and the wage-financed share of consumption.
- Know what the window is for. Nobody can design the final system. The task is to set the initial ownership conditions of whatever later gets locked in.
If the thesis is wrong, these moves leave a modernised fiscal base and a sovereign fund. If it is right, they are the only preparation that was ever available.
